Joy Ciofi is a postdoctoral researcher at The Gerontology Institute at Georgia State University. Her research examines engagement and changing social experiences for older adults in the United States. She has completed ethnographic fieldwork in community and public spaces including assisted living communities, casino complexes, and senior centers. Trained as a medical anthropologist at the University of Connecticut, she has studied the ways in which social, cultural, and economic values influence understandings of health and well-being. Her current work as a member of an interdisciplinary research team focuses on opportunities for meaningful engagement for persons living with dementia in assisted living communities.
