Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.(NO PDF)
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements as outlined in the “AAA Style Guide”
  • If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed. If the article is to be part of a special issue, please note the special issue's title or topic in the article's title (in parentheses at the end).

  • If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, it is a requirement that authors suggest a minimum of three reviewers in the "Comments for the Editor" at the time of submission

Author Guidelines

Manuscript submissions should include the following: a cover page with the author’s full name, affiliation, contact information, manuscript title; a 200-250 word abstract; the manuscript text (blinded); a reference list; and any illustrations, tables, or figures.

Please ensure that the final manuscript follows AAA guidelines as outlined in the “AAA Style Guide”.

AI and AI-assisted tools do not qualify for authorship in A&A. Authors who use AI or AI-assisted tools during the manuscript-writing process are expected to disclose their use in a separate section of the manuscript. Ultimately, the authors will be accountable for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of the work submitted. A&A is not liable for any discrepancies that may arise later.

References should appear at the end of the manuscript and not in footnotes. Endnotes are permitted but should be used sparingly and with justification. Please do not use the built-in word-processor function, but insert numbers and list corresponding notes at the end.

Articles should not exceed 9000 words, including references and all materials. Please keep formatting to a minimum (single-spaced, no underlining or boldface) and use OpenOffice, Word or Rich Text formats. Do not send PDFs.

Please note that Anthropology & Aging is unable to pay for permissions to publish pieces whose copyright is not held by the author, including translations, illustrations and long quotes. Authors should secure these permissions prior to submitting the article to the journal.

As a digital journal, we have the flexibility to include some digital features such as hyperlinks and digital media (audio, video) should they be relevant for your submission.

NOTE: In order to partially offset costs of open-access, indexing, and other services provided by this website, we ask that authors who publish in Anthropology & Aging consider becoming a member of the Association of Anthropology, Gerontology, and the Life Course (AAGE), currently $28/year for professional members and $18/year for students (some discounts available). Articles

Articles are peer-reviewed and should make a unique and substantial contribution to the field of aging and anthropology. We particularly welcome articles based on empirical research with a strong theoretical foundation. Contributors who wish to submit a group of articles for a special themed issue should contact A&A well in advance and provide an abstract of the papers planned for the issue. Article length should be 6000-9000 words for review, including endnotes, captions, appendices, and references.

Commentaries

Policy and scholarly commentaries are thoughtful and reflective essays on current events or social policies pertaining to aging and culture. Commentaries provide authors with an opportunity to discuss theoretical, ethical and other time-sensitive topical issues which do not lend themselves to a full-length article. These may also pertain to issues related to the practice of anthropology of aging in applied and professional settings or pedagogical reflections on teaching aging and anthropology.Commentaries typically range from 3000-5000 words.

Research Reports

Research or field reports are brief discussions of ongoing or recently completed studies and are typically 2000-5000 words. We are particularly interested in reports from graduate students and applied anthropologists whose work may not be suitable for a full-length, peer-reviewed article but might be of interest to those who conduct research on and teach about aging and anthropology.

Book and Multimodal Reviews

Anthropology & Aging does not currently accept unsolicited book reviews. If you are interested in writing a book review, and/or would like to see a title reviewed, please contact the Book Reviews Editor.

Portfolio

The Portfolio section is an invitation to researchers and other ‘makers’ working in the anthropology of aging and the life course to document their processes of (co-)creation. We are particularly interested in contributions that document ‘the making of’: of research pathways, of participatory methodologies, of artistic products (e.g., film, theatre, comics), and more.

The format of the contribution is relatively free (e.g., photo essay, interview, reflexive piece), but the use of (audio-)visual materials is strongly encouraged. If you are interested in contributing to the Portfolio section, please contact the Portfolio editors to present your idea and discuss the most appropriate format.

Copyright Notice

Authors who publish with this journal agree to the following terms:

  1. The Author retains copyright in the Work, where the term “Work” shall include all digital objects that may result in subsequent electronic publication or distribution.
  2. Upon acceptance of the Work, the author shall grant to the Publisher the right of first publication of the Work.
  3. The Author shall grant to the Publisher and its agents the nonexclusive perpetual right and license to publish, archive, and make accessible the Work in whole or in part in all forms of media now or hereafter known under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License or its equivalent, which, for the avoidance of doubt, allows others to copy, distribute, and transmit the Work under the following conditions:

Any such posting made before acceptance and publication of the Work shall be updated upon publication to include a reference to the Publisher-assigned DOI (Digital Object Identifier) and a link to the online abstract for the final published Work in the Journal.

Upon Publisher’s request, the Author agrees to furnish promptly to Publisher, at the Author’s own expense, written evidence of the permissions, licenses, and consents for use of third-party material included within the Work, except as determined by Publisher to be covered by the principles of Fair Use.
  7. The Author represents and warrants that:
    1. the Work is the Author’s original work;
    2. the Author has not transferred, and will not transfer, exclusive rights in the Work to any third party;
    3. the Work is not pending review or under consideration by another publisher;
    4. the Work has not previously been published;
    5. the Work contains no misrepresentation or infringement of the Work or property of other authors or third parties; and
    6. the Work contains no libel, invasion of privacy, or other unlawful matter.
  8. The Author agrees to indemnify and hold Publisher harmless from Author’s breach of the representations and warranties contained in Paragraph 6 above, as well as any claim or proceeding relating to Publisher’s use and publication of any content contained in the Work, including third-party content.
